CV for IT professionals from abroad
IT is not a regulated profession in Germany: you do not need recognition to work as a developer, admin or data specialist. All the more important is how clearly your CV shows what you can do technically and what your work achieved. Here is what IT employers look for.
1. Your stack in the very first line
Recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) look for technologies first. Name your specialisation and main tools right in the profile, not on page two.
2. Projects with results, not a list of duties
“Development and maintenance of software” says nothing. For each job describe 1–3 concrete projects: what you built, with what, and what it achieved, if you know.
Only use numbers you know for sure. Made-up percentages come out quickly in a technical interview.
3. Skills by category
- Languages: for example Python, TypeScript, Java, Go
- Frameworks: for example React, Spring Boot, Django
- Infrastructure: for example Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS/Azure/GCP
- Data: for example SQL, PostgreSQL, Spark
- Processes: for example Scrum, CI/CD, code review
Only what you have really used. A framework from a tutorial is not work experience. List certificates (AWS, Azure, CKA) with the year. A link to GitHub or a portfolio helps if it shows something meaningful.
4. Languages: honest and with a level
Many IT teams in Germany work in English, but German opens up noticeably more jobs, especially in medium-sized companies and the public sector. State both languages with the CEFR level, for example “Deutsch B1, Kurs B2 läuft”. Do not overstate: your level shows in the first conversation.
5. Degree, recognition and visa (in short)
- You do not need recognition to work in IT.
- For a visa or the Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU), however, your degree matters: a foreign university degree must be recognised or comparable to a German one. You can check this in the anabin database or with a statement of comparability from the ZAB (Zeugnisbewertung).
- IT specialists without a university degree can, under certain conditions, get a Blue Card with several years of relevant experience.
- Salary thresholds and details change every year.
Official information on visas and the Blue Card: make-it-in-germany.com, the official portal of the German government. This page is not legal advice.
One line in your CV is enough if it matters for the job, for example “Master Informatik (Ukraine), Zeugnisbewertung der ZAB liegt vor” or “EU-Bürgerin, keine Arbeitserlaubnis erforderlich”.
6. Checklist for your CV
- Technologies linked to real projects
- Results instead of duties
- Only numbers you know for sure
- Language levels stated honestly
- One page is enough for beginners
Describe your experience in your language.
cvfix turns this into a German or English CV with a clear stack and concrete projects, and invents nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Do IT professionals need to have their degree recognised in Germany?
No, IT professions are not regulated. For a visa or the Blue Card, however, a foreign university degree must be recognised or comparable; this is checked via anabin or a ZAB statement of comparability.
Should my IT CV be in German or English?
In the language of the job ad. If the ad is in English, an English CV usually works; if it is in German, a German CV is better. cvfix creates the CV in the language of the job ad.
How many technologies should I list?
The ones you have really worked with, by category. Ten proven technologies are better than thirty words you cannot explain in the interview.
Do I need a GitHub link?
If it shows meaningful projects of your own, yes, in the CV header. An empty or outdated profile does not help.
Does cvfix invent projects or numbers?
No. cvfix phrases and structures your information more clearly but does not add projects, technologies or figures you did not mention. Before sending, the result is automatically checked against your input.
