Every Industry Speaks Differently
IT & Software
Tech stacks, methodologies, and measurable results. Skip generic phrases like “team player” — show what you’ve built.
Healthcare & Nursing
Certifications, specializations, and patient care experience. Clinical terminology shows competence — general descriptions don’t.
Finance & Controlling
Regulatory knowledge, tools, and numbers. Name specific volumes, standards, and software — that convinces more than adjectives.
Engineering
CAD tools, standards, project scale. Engineers are measured by their tools and outcomes, not soft skills.
Marketing & Sales
Campaigns, KPIs, and concrete results. Show ROI, conversion rates, and the tools you’ve mastered.
HR & Recruiting
ATS systems, talent development, and labour law knowledge. Name specific hiring volumes and processes.
CV Tips Straight from HR
These recommendations come from interviews with HR managers at international companies in Germany. No theory — just what actually matters in the screening process.
HR managers spend 2–4 seconds on the first glance at your CV. In that time, the structure must be immediately clear: name, current role, relevant experience. If it’s hard to read, it gets skipped — regardless of your qualifications.
Many applicants write 3 pages with a vague summary on page 1. It doesn’t get read. Stick to 1–2 pages of concrete, relevant information. If you can fit everything on one page — even better.
This is not an exaggeration. Spelling and grammar mistakes lead to immediate rejection. Especially for non-native speakers, this is closely watched. Have your CV reviewed by a native speaker or professional tool.
If the position is posted in English, apply in English. If in German — in German. Language mismatch is the most common mistake HR sees. Your CV must be in the same language as the job posting.
HR doesn’t just scan for keywords — they assess whether you speak the language of your industry. An IT resume sounds completely different from one in healthcare or finance. Use the terminology that’s standard in your field, not generic phrases.
Many HR managers don’t read cover letters — but some hiring managers do. If you write one: don’t repeat your CV, name the correct position, and keep it short. A mistake in the job title is especially embarrassing and gets noticed immediately.
A photo is no longer required in Germany. A bad photo hurts more than no photo. If you include one, it must be professional and match your industry. A lab coat photo for a designer role? Better to skip it.
If your German is basic and you’re applying for an English-language position — consider leaving it off. HR will check it in the interview anyway. Many candidates understate their level and lose opportunities. Only list what you can confidently demonstrate.
